Getting the Most Out of Your Mews Candle
To get the best experience out of your Mews scented candle, we have all your questions answered along with some extra special care tips.
What should I do when burning a new candle?
The moment you get to use your new candle is always exciting and it’s important to let it burn for at least 2 hours and allow the wax to pool evenly to the edge of the vessel. By doing this, you’re giving your candle the best chance to shine with maximum fragrance delivery every time you use it and will ensure an even burn for future uses.
How long should I burn my candle for?
Unlike that classic song by The Bangles, Eternal Flame, your candles should only be burning for no more than 2 hours at a time. If you’re overburning your candle, what can happen is that the carbon will start to collect onto your wick, making it unstable and can lead to a fire risk in your home.
Where should I display my candles?
Our Mews Collective candles are full of personality and would look great in any space, but it’s important that your candles have a home that is safe, within your sight and away from anything that could catch on fire. We recommend placing your candle on a stable and heat-resistant surface before burning. Be sure to also keep your candles away from drafts, water, moisture, and out of reach of children and pets.
Are candles safe to move or touch when burning?
Both the candle vessels and the liquid wax inside are generally hot to touch when burning. So if you decide that your candle would look better somewhere else or if you want your scented candle to permeate a new space, make sure to extinguish the flame and allow the candle to cool before moving it.
Should I be taking care of the wick?
Absolutely! The wick of a candle is fundamental in preventing the glass or vessel from overheating. When burning, make sure the wick is upright and in the middle of the candle and avoiding allowing the wick to float to the side of the vessel. For regular maintenance, always ensure your candles’ wick is trimmed to 5mm before each burn.
Is it safe to leave a burning candle unattended?
If you decide to leave the room without extinguishing your candle, you are quite literally playing with fire. To prevent any accidents, ensure your candle is not burning if you decide to pop outside and make a habit of putting the lid back on just to be sure.
If I’m not using my candle, where should I put it?
Scented candles are sensitive to temperature, so make sure that your unused candle is stored in a cool, dry place away from moisture and direct sunlight. If you ever decide to “rekindle” your relationship with your candle again, it will still be kept in its newest condition.
Should I keep using my candle if the wax is almost touching the bottom of the vessel?
To avoid any risks or heat damage to your candle, it is safer to discontinue your candle if there is less than 10mm of solid wax left at the base of the vessel.
How do I get rid of residue wax?
Before you start scraping at your candle with a knife or a spoon (which can damage the vessel), the best way to get rid of candle wax is by placing it in hot water. This will soften and lift the remaining wax quite easily and allow you to re-purpose your finished candle into a multitude of purposes for your home.
What should I do with an unwanted or finished candle?
Because candles are not perishable, unwanted candles can be re-purposed or re-gifted to a new home or recipient. Our Mews Collective candles come in custom-designed ceramic vessels, so even if you don’t have any wrapping paper lying around, the candles are already bold and full of personality.
For finished candles, remove the residue wax and re-purpose your vessel into a variety of decorative home accessories like a pen holder, a makeup brush holder or a jewellery box.
